Getting started
How do I install Vclip?
On a computer, open Vclip's page in the Chrome Web Store (or Microsoft Edge Add-ons, in Edge) and click Add. It takes a few seconds and needs no account. Then click the puzzle piece next to your browser's address bar and pin Vclip, so its icon is always one click away.
Which browsers and computers does it work on?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera and Vivaldi, on Mac, Windows and Chromebook. Safari and Firefox aren't supported yet, and there's no phone version yet.
What are the three moves?
- See it. Point at a video and a Clip button appears in its top-left corner. Click it, or press Alt+I.
- Pin it. Drag the start and end handles to the moment you want, or press Alt+I where it starts and Alt+O where it ends.
- Keep it. Pick a size and click Save clip, or press Alt+S. It lands in My Clips.
Do I need to reload pages after installing?
No. Vclip adds itself to the tabs you already had open when you installed it.
What's in the Vclip button in my toolbar?
Click Vclip's icon for Clip and Screenshot on the video in front of you, My clips, your shortcut keys (with Change shortcuts), and two settings: Also save to Downloads › Vclip and Show the Clip button on videos.
Making a clip
How do I open the clip panel?
Three ways: click the Clip button on the video, press Alt+I (which also pins the start where the video is), or click Vclip's icon in the toolbar and then Clip. The panel opens at the bottom of the page. Drag its top bar to move it out of the way.
How do I set the start and end exactly?
- Drag the two handles on the timeline. On a long video, pull a handle past the end of the bar to reach further along.
- Type a time in the Start or End box:
1:05,65or1:02:30all work, and so does1:05.5. Press Enter to set it. - Use −1s and +1s to step by a second, or Now to use where the video is.
- Click a handle and use the left and right arrows to move it by a tenth of a second, or hold Shift to move by a whole second.
The shortest clip is half a second.
Can I check it before saving?
Yes. Click ▶ Preview and Vclip plays just your clip, then stops at the end.
Why does saving take as long as the clip?
Vclip records the moment while it plays, right in your browser, so a 10-second clip takes 10 seconds to save. The video jumps to your start, plays, and stops at your end. Keep the tab open until it says it's saved.
I watch at 1.5x or 2x. Does my clip come out fast?
No. Vclip records at normal speed, then puts your speed back when it's done.
How do I stop a clip that's saving?
Press Esc. Nothing is saved. If you jump around in the video while it's recording, Vclip stops too, so the clip doesn't come out wrong.
Does it work on videos inside other pages?
Yes, like a YouTube video embedded in a blog post. Shortcuts go to the video you last pressed play on.
Does the sound come with it?
Yes. Clips keep the video's sound.
Sizes
Which sizes can I save in?
Original keeps the video's own shape. Status / Story (9:16) is for WhatsApp Status, Instagram and TikTok stories, Feed (4:5) for Instagram and Facebook posts, Square (1:1) for anywhere, and Wide (16:9) for YouTube and slides. Pick one under Size in the panel.
What's the difference between Crop and Fit?
Crop zooms in and cuts the sides: drag the white frame on the video to choose what stays in. Fit keeps the whole video and fills the space around it with a blurred copy, so nothing is cut off.
Why can't I choose Crop or Fit?
Because the video is already that shape, so there's nothing to change. The panel says so: "This video is already 16:9", for example.
Does Vclip remember my size?
Yes. It keeps the last size and Crop or Fit you used, for next time.
Screenshots
How do I take a screenshot?
Press Alt+P, or click Screenshot in the panel or in Vclip's toolbar button. Vclip saves the frame on screen, in the size you picked, and copies it, so you can paste it straight into a chat.
It says "Screenshot saved" but it isn't copied
Browsers only let a page copy after you've clicked on it, and a shortcut alone sometimes isn't enough. Click anywhere on the video's page and try again, or open My Clips and press Copy on the screenshot.
Where do screenshots go?
Into My Clips (use the Screenshots filter to see just them) and, if that setting is on, Downloads › Vclip as a PNG picture.
My Clips
How do I open My Clips?
Click Vclip's icon in the toolbar, then My clips. After saving, the panel also offers Open My Clips.
What can I do there?
- Watch a clip by clicking it. Click a screenshot twice to open it big.
- Rename it by clicking its name.
- Download it again, or Copy a screenshot.
- Delete it: click once, then again to confirm.
- Search your clips, and filter to Clips or Screenshots.
- Go back to the moment with the source link. On YouTube it opens at the exact second.
Why is every clip also in my Downloads folder?
So you have a copy outside the browser. Vclip saves one into Downloads › Vclip by default. To stop, switch off Also save to Downloads › Vclip in Vclip's toolbar button.
Where are my clips kept? Do they sync?
On your computer, inside your browser. They don't sync to your other computers. Uninstalling Vclip deletes My Clips, but the copies in Downloads › Vclip stay, so keep those if a clip matters.
Something's not working
"This site doesn't allow recording this video."
Paid streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, and a few other sites, protect their videos from recording. Vclip respects that, so it can't clip those. It works on almost every other site.
I don't see the Clip button
Point at the video itself, and it appears in the top-left corner for a moment. If it never does, check Show the Clip button on videos is on in Vclip's toolbar button. You can always press Alt+I instead.
"No video found on this page." or "The video has no picture yet."
The video may still be loading. Press play on it, then try again.
"Press play on the video once, then try again."
Some sites don't let a video start until you've played it yourself. Press play once, then save again.
"Waiting for the video to load…" or "The video wouldn't start playing."
Your connection is slow, so the video is taking a while to reach your clip's start. Vclip waits up to 20 seconds. Check your connection, then try again.
My clip stopped by itself
Vclip stops if you jump around in the video while it's recording ("You moved the video while it was recording"), or if the page switches to another video ("The video changed"). Let it play through, then try again.
The shortcut keys don't work
Another extension may be using the same keys. Vclip listens for its keys itself when that happens, so try again on the video's page, outside any text box. You can also choose your own keys: see Changing your shortcuts.
Vclip says it "can't work on this page"
Your browser's own pages (a new tab, settings, the extension stores) don't allow extensions. Open a website with a video, like YouTube, then click Vclip again.
Privacy and plans
Are my clips private?
Yes. Vclip makes your clips on your computer and keeps them there. They're never uploaded, and we never see them. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
Is Vclip free?
Yes. Vclip is in early access, so everything in it is free for everyone right now. Pro and Studio, our paid plans, open soon; once they do, every new install starts with 7 days of Pro, with no card needed. Compare them on the Pricing page.
What counts as a clip on the Free plan?
Each video you save is one clip. Screenshots never count. On Free, your 7 clips a week come back every Monday. (In early access, there's no limit.)
Can I clip anything I want?
Vclip is a tool, like a screenshot, and what you share is up to you. A clip of someone else's video is still their work, so credit the creator, share the way each site allows, and don't repost paid content. See our Terms of Use.
